Recruitment procedure for the International Ph. D. Project
(MPD - Międzynarodowe Projekty Doktoranckie)
for proposal.
Krakow Interdisciplinary PhD-Project in Nanoscience and Advanced Nanostructures
The Ph.D. program is open to all candidates - advertisements will give a broad description of
knowledge and competencies required and eligibility criteria.
However, eligible candidates must meet the following sine qua non conditions:
- Candidate must be a graduate of the post-graduate (2.-degree) studies in domains: physics, technical physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, applied computer science, electronics, material engineering, biophysics and biotechnology.
- Candidate must be under 30 years of age. His/her diploma (cf. above) must be with the grade: very good (or equivalent) and must be dated not before 1st January 2005.
- Candidate applying for participation in given project must prepare a short (not more than two pages) description (letter-of-intent) of his/her qualifications for the project's execution: he/she should point out how the former education (courses completed, skills acquired) make him/her a person most eligible for the given project. Letter-of-intent should be prepared in English.
- Candidate must have a possibly complete knowledge of English as a working language, certified with appropriate exam certificate(s). The least acceptable certificate will be the FCE (or equivalent) but priority may be given to candidates who present higher-degree diplomas. Council of Europe Level B2, IELTS of 5.0 and BEC Vantage are considered equivalent to FCE. An exam passed at the University of the candidate during his/her studies will be considered as equivalent to FCE provided that the candidate delivers an attestation of the equivalency to FCE, or B2 level issued by the University.
All candidates also must present:
- An M.Sc. diploma (cf. above for the possible time-period and grade) together with a detailed list of all courses taken and assessed during the study period (the so-called diploma supplement in case of Polish students).
- An evaluation of his/her diploma thesis, prepared by the thesis tutor and thesis referee. In addition, a more complete reference prepared by candidate's diploma tutor is strongly recommendable. Such a reference should focus on candidate's assets for performing independent scientific research, abilities shown for a team-work, etc.
Candidates may also present:
- Candidates whose scientific results have been already published prepare a list his/her publications. In case of several-author articles, the candidate should try to evaluate approximately and state his/her contribution to the paper.
- Candidates who during the study period completed extra courses that may have connection with the target-project should present the adequate certificates and brief characterization of the course.
- Candidates who may present some professional experience in the framework of research work should do so, but only if it is possible to establish a direct connection between the experience gained and the target-project.
- Candidates who successfully passed an entry examination to a Ph.D. programme (physics, chemistry and related domains) during last two years and completed no more than one year of the studies may also apply to the MPD program. These candidates should present a reference letter of their tutors within the framework of the actual Ph.D. programme containing a detailed evaluation of candidate's abilities (cf. 2.) together with the approval of the present tutor of candidate's application to the MPD.
The recruitment will be carried out by the Recruitment Committee, composed of 4 to 6 persons, selected from the would-be-tutors in the MPD project and co-chaired by the persons in charge of the Ph.D. programs in the two institutions (AGH-UST and ICSCh PAN): Associate Professor Andrzej Lenda (AGH) and Professor Józef Korecki (PAN). A person representing the Foundation for Polish Science will be invited to the Commitee.
The recruitment procedure takes into account:
- The reference of the candidate's thesis tutor: 0 - 20 points;
- The adequacy of the prepared letter-of-intent with the target-project: 0 - 20 points;
- The list of already published papers, related with the target-project: 0 - 10 points;
- In case of candidates who completed successfully first year of a P.D. programme - the reference of the present candidate's tutor: 0 - 10 points;
- The certificates of extra qualifications that may be of some value for the execution of the target-project: 0 - 5 points;
- The former professional experience that may be of some value for the execution of the target-project: 0 - 5 points
In case the Recruitment Committee is unable to chose the candidates applying for the same project on the basis of the documentation presented it may be necessary to arrange for a personal interview with the persons concerned. However, the Recruitment Committee must limit the number of such multiple candidates for each project to three persons. All applicants will be informed after the selection process about the strengths and weaknesses of their applications.
